How to Browse Amazon's Book Categories
The Category Explorer tab shows Amazon’s complete book category tree — the same structure readers browse and Amazon uses for bestseller lists — without needing an ASIN. Use it to scout a shelf before you write or list a book: see how crowded each subcategory is, which ones you can target in ads, and link straight to each category’s bestseller list.
The toolbar’s Marketplace dropdown chooses which Amazon store’s tree you are browsing; it defaults to the United States. Each marketplace keeps its own cached tree — category names are localized, so German categories start at Bücher rather than Books — and bestseller links point at that store’s site. Switching marketplaces loads the other store’s tree.
What the tree shows
The tree has three top-level roots: Books (print and general categories), Audible Books & Originals, and Kindle Store. Expand any category to see its subcategories, as deep as you like. Each row shows:
- Product count. An estimate of how many products compete in that category, shown as a range (for example “12.5k–20.8k products”) because Amazon reports counts as a range rather than an exact number. Counts appear after you click Refresh counts for the categories you have open.
- Targetable badge. A checkmark marks categories that can be used as a target in Sponsored Products campaigns. If a category isn’t targetable, you can still rank for its bestseller list — you just can’t buy ads aimed directly at it.
- Bestsellers link. Opens the category’s bestseller list on Amazon so you can scan what’s selling there.
Building and refreshing the tree
The tree is fetched from Amazon once and cached for up to a week, so browsing is fast and costs nothing per view. When the cache is older than seven days the toolbar marks it outdated and offers a Rebuild tree button; confirming re-fetches the current structure. Refresh counts updates the product counts for the categories currently visible on screen — both actions go to Amazon, so they follow the same per-minute request limit as the rest of the app.
Picking a subcategory
A practical workflow:
- Expand down toward your book’s genre until you reach categories narrow enough that a typical reader of your book would browse them.
- Refresh counts and compare the ranges: a category with a few hundred products is usually easier to crack into the top 100 than one with hundreds of thousands.
- Open the bestseller list and check the top titles — price points, covers, series versus standalone — to make sure the shelf matches your book.
- If the category is targetable, note its browse node ID (visible in the Bestsellers link) for ad targeting later.
What to do next
Once you know your book’s categories from a real ASIN, compare them with this tree using the category lookup guide, and turn promising keywords into campaigns with the Keyword Forge guide.
